What to do

The North Fork Valley is Colorado’s Organic Food and Wine Country offering an incredible array of local specialty foods and world-class—yet accessible—locally-grown and fermented wines.

If that wasn’t enough, the Valley is full of incredible outdoor recreation opportunities from mountain biking to fly fishing, rafting and hiking.

After you visit farms and wineries or explore the outdoors by day, kick back for a sweet evening of live music under some of the best stargazing in Colorado.

  • Cluster of ripe purple plums on a tree branch with green leaves.

    Wineries

Experience some of the finest wines you’ve never heard of fermented from grapes grown on the property by the farmers that grew them. This is the real deal of small-batch, boutique wines that will blow your mind. The fertile volcanic soil and cool mountain air make for perfect growing conditions for complex and flavorful ferments that are sure to please any palette.

Follow the West Elks Wine Trail to unlock an incredible flavor journey and some of the best views in the North Fork Valley. Our unique high-elevation, alpine-desert climate coupled with rich volcanic soil create conditions that provide for a bountiful, award-winning boutique winery scene that centers good farming practices and land first and foremost.

    Slow Food

Slow down and savor the North Fork Valley one bite at a time. Rooted in the global Slow Food movement, this place takes pride in food that’s grown, raised, and prepared with care—often just steps from where you’re enjoying it. From farm dinners under open skies to thoughtfully crafted meals in town, you’ll taste the difference that comes from rich soil, hard work, and deep respect for the land. This is food with a story—fresh, flavorful, and meant to be lingered over.

    Big Skies

Step outside and into something bigger. The North Fork Valley offers wide-open trails, winding rivers, and quiet backroads that invite you to explore at your own pace. By day, hike through high desert mesas, ride beneath towering peaks, or cast a line in gold-medal waters. By night, the valley reveals one of its best-kept secrets—exceptional stargazing under vast, unspoiled skies. With minimal light pollution and a deep connection to the land, this is the kind of place where you can truly unplug, look up, and feel small in all the right ways.

Nestled between two of Colorado’s largest wilderness regions, the outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the North Fork Valley. The North Fork of the Gunnison River offers world-class fly fishing, rafting and SUPing. Hike and mountain bike Jumbo Mountain or Needle Rock if you want to stay in the Valley or head up to Kebler Pass or the Grand Mesa for mountainous forests and alpine lake vibes. In the winter, the Grand Mesa turns into a winter wonderland with some of North America’s best cross country skiing.
